A Unique Orientation Day

The first day in school can be an intimidating time for students, especially to those who choose to study part time and maintain a regular job. The question such as “Will I be able to survive and succeed in my journey of studying?” pops up into the mind, and then worries come after. This is the typical feeling of a student when attending an orientation day.

Cosmopolitan College of Commerce and Technology has remodelled their orientation programme to welcome the new intake of ND (National Diploma), HNC (Higher National Certificate) and HND (Higher National Diploma) students. They held it last Monday, May 17, at their Student Auditorium. The college is happy that they are now on its 9th intake for the HND Programme which was initiated in 2006 and on its 12th batch of students for the Informatics Programme.

What is so unique about this Orientation Day is that it served three goals:

1) explain what they can expect from the college and what is expected of them

2) provide motivation thru inspirational speech from special people in the

college

3) acquaint students with the information that they need to accustom themselves with

The ECA department has planned several activities to be carried out this new semester for the students.

A special part of the programme was the involvement of Mr. Aziz Latip, the Executive Chairman of the college. He shared his own experiences of working and at the same time taking up his MBA, plus attending to the needs of his family as a husband and father. He imparted words of wisdom and motivation to the new students to strengthen their spirits to take on the challenge of completing their studies despite struggles and obstacles.

Another portion of the programme which was notable was the focus on academic aspect of the college. Academic guidelines were emphasised by the respective registrars. Coursework, attendance, examinations regulations were discussed and explained. The college also presented their Business Skills Programme which is an additional subject designed to specifically further the employability potential of the students. Since almost every student is working, the college would like to give them the edge in terms of employability thru enhancing their communication skills, tapping into their leadership capabilities and equipping them with techniques in decision making, problem solving and time management.

Part of this unique programme is the awarding of certificates to the HND graduates who have received their diploma in Business Accounting and Business Management. A very touching speech was delivered by Haji Abdullah Haji Md Yassin to express his deepest appreciation to the college and to those people who have helped him in his journey. Full of emotions, he says, “Alhamdullilah, all my hardwork and efforts have finally paid off. My advice to all students, study hard and don’t give up easily. Always remember this, in the midst of difficulties, lie opportunities, so never give up. Your hard work will definitely award you with a bright future, Insya Allah.”

Towards the end of the event, the college announced and presented to the audience the recipient of the Full Scholarship (one year) Award. The scholarship exam was held last May 7 and 8. Among the 52 students who sat for the exam, Rawandi Rifaie Bin Hj Awang Yaya scored the highest and was considered deserving of the Full Scholarship Award.

The college is looking forward to a fruitful semester for the new students. The management has planned numerous activities revolving on academic as well as sports. Part of the orientation day is a beach gathering which will be held at the Muara Beach on Sunday,May 23.
