On the 22nd of July 2023, Cosmopolitan College hosted its first Sports Day after the pandemic occurred. Ever since its announcement, it became one of COSMO’s most anticipated event as it brought together the entire college community for a day of fun and excitement.
Amber, Amethyst, Jade, and Sapphire spent weeks training and preparing for this long-awaited event. A variety of sports were included; Basketball, Handball, Netball, Badminton, Futsal, Tug-of-war, Track & field, E sports, and Chess, as well as a 5-minute marching and performance from each house on the actual day.
As early as 6:30 am on a beautiful Saturday morning, people were already arriving at the Padang dan Belapan Stadium. Everyone was ready dressed in their custom-designed sports attire, and the stadium was filled with learning partners, facilitators and staff in yellow, purple, green, and blue. The athletes were stretching, the hosts were preparing, supporters were getting ready and the spectators were waiting in anticipation.
The opening ceremony started off with marching and performances. The performances definitely gave everyone a boost of energy that morning. Everyone was cheering and hyped as the music echoed throughout the stadium. The performers and all their flashy moves gave it their all to give a memorable experience, not only for themselves but the audience too. Once they were done, to everyone’s surprise, Syamde Bright Kids School came out to perform as well. Out of all the performances, they received the loudest cheers from the audience.
As the opening ceremony concludes, the stadium comes alive with the spirit of competition. Despite only having two sports take place that day, everyone was still highly anticipating the games to start. First off were track and field races: 100m and 200m sprints and 4x100m relays for male, female, and lecturer competitors. The stadium fell silent as the hosts yelled, “On your marks. Get set. GO!”
Each time, the houses erupt into excitement and cheer loudly in support of their own team. As the day progressed, the energy and excitement built up. Finally, the game everyone looked forward to was about to begin, the tug-of-war. Groups of people gathered around, already cheering before the game even started. But when it did start and the whistle was blown, energy skyrocketed. Screams of encouragement and frustration mixed in the air. A look of struggle and determination was plastered on the faces of the competitors as they tug and pulled, fighting for their win.
By the time the student’s category tug-of-war was done, everyone’s energy had depleted and their vocal cords were strained from yelling, yet something kick started it once again, an unplanned tug-of-war game amongst the lecturers. Students were elated, getting up off their seats just to go under the sun and watch their beloved lecturers battle each other. And once again, screams and cheers flooded the air. Not only can everyone’s passion and enthusiasm be heard, but also be seen. It is during these moments that lasting memories and bonds are forged. Soon enough it was time for the announcement of the winners and the presentation of prizes. While the atmosphere remained fueled with friendly rivalry and competitive spirits, the priority was always sportsmanship. The participants’ achievements were awarded trophies and certificates, along with acknowledgment from the houses. The spectators had different expectations for each of the houses however, in the end Jade came out victorious, winning overall.
This sports day marked a celebration of diversity, encouraging students of all backgrounds, ages, and physical abilities to come forward and participate. It brings people together, transcends barriers, and fosters a healthy competitive spirit. Beyond the trophies and medals, the memories and friendships made during this event linger long after the day has passed.
